QARAQAJIN, KURDISTAN REGION, IRAQ, OCTOBER 2, 2026: Hajji Saniyya and other elderly women make traditional "Giska Gaza" brooms in the Qaraqajin sub-district of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The handmade brooms are produced from wild plants that are harvested, dried in the sun and carefully bundled and shaped by hand. Despite the availability of modern plastic alternatives, local women continue to preserve the traditional craft, with the natural brooms still used for sweeping courtyards and rough outdoor surfaces in rural communities.
