IZMIR, TURKEY – OCTOBER 4, 2026: Animal rights activists staged a protest in Izmir on World Animal Protection Day, opposing the decision to round up and euthanize stray animals. Members of the Izmir Right to Life Advocates gathered in front of Alsancak Train Station in the Konak district and protested against the Law Amending the Animal Protection Act, which was passed by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on July 30, 2024, published in the Official Gazette on August 2, 2024, and entered into force. Activists marched from Alsancak Station along Cyprus Martyrs Street before gathering in front of the Türkan Saylan Cultural Center. Chanting slogans including “No to your laws, let the animals live” and “Government, resign,” the protesters formed a human chain to draw attention to animal rights. Photo by Turgay Kilic / JNA Press.
