KATHMANDU, NEPAL, OCTOBER 13, 2026: A child flies a kite during the Dashain festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. Dashain, Nepal’s biggest Hindu festival, is celebrated over 15 days and commemorates the victory of good over evil, with devotees worshipping Goddess Durga. Kite flying is a popular tradition during Dashain, as the festival coincides with the arrival of autumn, when clearer skies and favorable winds provide ideal conditions. According to popular belief, flying kites high into the sky conveys a message to Indra, the Hindu god of rain, that the monsoon rains are no longer needed. The tradition is also associated with seasonal change, outdoor recreation and bringing families and communities together during the festive period.
