BANGKOK, THAILAND, OCTOBER 16, 2026: Members of Thailand’s Assembly of the Poor and allied community networks march towards the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center during a protest against the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Bangkok. Protesters representing communities affected by dams, farmers’ debt groups and other local networks carry banners and call for greater public participation in economic decision-making. They present six demands, including debt cancellation for low- and middle-income countries facing debt crises, public scrutiny of government foreign borrowing, an end to subsidies for large corporations, progressive taxation and more democratic and transparent central banks. Police maintain a heavy security presence along the protest route and around the meeting venue.
