IZMIR, TURKEY, OCTOBER 5, 2026: Protesters gather outside the Turkan Saylan Cultural Center in Izmir to oppose reports that Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay could join President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AKP. Trade unions, professional organizations, political groups and civil society representatives joined the demonstration after police prevented participants from holding a planned march in Konak. Tugay resigned from the CHP in June and has since served as an independent mayor. Protesters called on him to resign rather than change his political affiliation while remaining in office.
