DHAKA, Bangladesh — Oct. 7, 2026: Discarded plastic, household refuse and other waste line sections of the Buriganga River and its waterways, including parts of its historic channel in Dhaka. The accumulation reflects a wider pollution problem affecting rivers and aquatic environments around the world. The Buriganga, an important waterway for Dhaka, receives waste from surrounding communities and industrial areas. Persistent plastic pollution has contributed to the degradation of the river and poses broader challenges for aquatic ecosystems, water quality and communities that depend on waterways.
