SOLOK, WEST SUMATRA, INDONESIA – OCTOBER 7, 2026: Residents move through Solok, West Sumatra, amid haze linked to widespread forest and land fires on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. The fires have contributed to persistent air pollution affecting parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Data from IQAir indicated that the air quality index in West Sumatra reached 189, a level classified as unhealthy and approaching the very unhealthy range. The prolonged haze has affected visibility and raised concerns over air quality and public health across affected areas. The fires are part of recurring seasonal wildfire and land-burning incidents in Indonesia that can produce extensive smoke and transboundary haze. Photo by Wawan Kurniawan / JNA Press.
