MADRID, SPAIN, OCTOBER 8, 2026: Thousands of people march through central Madrid in memory of Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman who died on October 7, two weeks after being evicted from the apartment where she had lived for 71 years. Organized by the Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid, the march began at Puerta del Sol and ended outside Abascal's former home in the Retiro district. Around 20,000 people participated, according to the Spanish government's delegation in Madrid. Abascal's eviction on September 23 sparked widespread housing protests and encampments across Spain, with demonstrators demanding stronger tenant protections and measures against evictions.
