Naples celebrates annual Feast of Saint Januarius

Every year, on September 19, thousands of people gather in Naples for the traditional ceremony of the liquefaction of the blood of Saint Januarius, the city’s patron saint. Religious groups and confraternities come together for the event, alongside faithful who believe they have received miracles, curious visitors, and people from across the city who come to pay tribute to the saint. For many, it is not only a religious ceremony but also a deeply emotional day of celebration, devotion, and community. The liquefaction of the blood is traditionally considered a good omen for Naples. When it does not occur, believers have historically associated it with difficult moments in the city’s history, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and other disasters.
